Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Asa Local Government Area (LGA) in Kwara State, like many other parts of Nigeria, faces challenges in its food supply chains, which are heavily impacted by geopolitical crises such as ethnic conflicts, political instability, and regional insecurity. These crises disrupt the movement of goods and services, affecting food production, transportation, and distribution across the region (Suleiman & Musa, 2023). Geopolitical factors, including local governance structures, ethnic tensions, and regional political conflicts, play a significant role in the disruption of food supply chains.
The primary food supply chain in Asa LGA, which involves both local farmers and traders, has been consistently affected by these crises. Farmers face insecurity, loss of farmland, and limited access to markets due to these geopolitical issues. Similarly, traders and suppliers often encounter difficulties in transporting goods safely. This study seeks to explore how geopolitical crises influence food security in Asa LGA by examining disruptions in food supply chains and the socioeconomic consequences of these challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Food supply chains in Asa LGA have been severely disrupted by geopolitical crises, including ethnic conflicts and political instability. These disruptions have led to food shortages, increased prices, and heightened insecurity for local farmers and consumers. The study aims to assess the extent to which these crises impact food supply chains and provide recommendations for mitigating these effects to ensure food security in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it highlights the relationship between geopolitical crises and food security in rural Nigerian regions. By understanding the ways in which political and ethnic factors affect food supply chains, policymakers and local governments can develop strategies to minimize disruptions and ensure food stability in vulnerable communities like Asa LGA.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the food supply chain in Asa LGA of Kwara State, examining how geopolitical crises affect food production, transportation, and distribution. Limitations may include challenges in accessing data on local food supply chains and the difficulties of assessing indirect impacts caused by regional conflicts.
